Joe Root on Friday (June 20) closed the gap between him and Rahul Dravid by taking KL Rahul’s catch off Brydon Carse when India were up against England at Headingley, Leeds. In the process, England got the much-needed breakthrough just when things were getting out of hand from Ben Stokes and his boys.
Joe Root Eyes Yet Another Major Record In Test Cricket
The wicket came during the 25th over of India’s innings after Stokes won the toss and asked India to bat first. The opening partnership gave the visitors more than a steady start until Rahul found himself caught at the slip cordon.
With that, Root, placed at first slip, has now caught 209 times in whites in the international arena, just one less than Rahul Dravid. Mahela Jayawardene, Steve Smith, and Jacques Kallis – three of the greats in red-ball cricket – are also in the chart.
Most Catches In Tests
- Rahul Dravid (ICC/Ind) - 210
- Joe Root (Eng) - 209
- Mahela Jayawardene (SL) - 205
- Steve Smith (Aus) & Jacques Kallis (ICC/SA) - 200
Considering the fact that India have got off to a brilliant start, all eyes will be on Root when England will be in action later in this match. As of now, the newly-looked Shubman Gill-led side are in charge, even though Sai Sudharsan failed to add any runs on the board on his memorable debut for India.
India went to lunch on Day 1 after putting 92/2 on the board. While Carse gave England the opening blow, Ben Stokes took the wicket of Sudharsan with a well-executed trap. Nevertheless, Yashasvi Jaiswal is still going strong, batting on 42* off 74 balls.
