Jharkhand trounced Madhya Pradesh by just one run in Super League Group A clash of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26 on Sunday. It was a finish that had everything: tension, confusion, drama and a last-ball decision that left one team celebrating and the other stunned.

With three needed off the final delivery, a full toss, a desperate run and a no-ball review turning into a run-out check, the game in Pune spiralled into chaos before Jharkhand finally emerged on top to extend their unbeaten run in SMAT 2025.

Early carnage sets the tone

Jharkhand’s innings began at a blistering pace after MP opted to field. Ishan Kishan walked out with intent written all over his bat. Alongside Virat Singh, he tore into the powerplay like a man on a mission.

Kishan was in beast mode. Charging spinners, picking gaps, clearing ropes. He smashed 63 off just 30 balls, striking at over 200 and for a moment, it looked like Jharkhand were cruising towards a 200-plus total. Virat Singh played the perfect foil as the openers put MP on the back foot early.

Just when the game seemed to be slipping away, MP captain Rajat Patidar rolled the dice. Out came the cutters, the pace went off and suddenly, the pitch started talking.

That is when Venkatesh Iyer stepped up. He bowled like a man who read the surface perfectly. Iyer finished with 3 for 17, choking the middle overs, while Rahul Batham kept things tight at the other end. Jharkhand stumbled to 181/9. Competitive. But no longer intimidating.

MP leave it late… maybe too late

The chase started steadily before MP lost Venkatesh Iyer early. But then came a solid rebuild. Harsh Gawli anchored the innings with a calm 61 while Harpreet Singh played the aggressor, scoring 77* off 48 balls, timing the ball sweetly and finding the fence at will.

As the overs ticked away, MP stayed in the hunt. Maybe too comfortably. They took it deep. Very deep. With 3 needed off the final ball, the equation was simple. One clean hit or smart running. What followed was anything but simple.

Last-ball chaos no-ball check and a run-out verdict

On the last ball, Sushant Mishra fired in a full toss outside off. Aniket Verma slapped it towards deep point and set off for the run. The throw came in flat as Verma turned for the second and was run out by Ishan Kishan.

The batter took a review for a no-ball for height as the verdict came: not a no-ball and then showed that the batter had fallen short of his crease, resulting in Jharkhand winning a thriller by a solitary run.

Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan’s Jharkhand have now won nine games on the bounce. MP will rue taking it too deep whereas Jharkhand will remember this night for a long, long time.
