Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have started scouting for uncapped players ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. As part of this process, TNPL standout Sunny Sandhu was recently seen at trials conducted by the three-time IPL champions in Chennai.

Speaking exclusively to Cricxtasy, Sunny Sandhu shared his experience of attending the KKR trials. He revealed that the franchise organised a full 20-over match for the KKR XI, where he got the opportunity to showcase his skills.

Newly appointed KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar was present during the game and later spoke to him.

“I was called by KKR for the trials of KKR XI. Abhishek Nayar sir was also there and we were made to play a proper T20 match. After that, I spoke to Abhishek sir and he gave me feedback on areas where I need to improve,” Sandhu said.

Sandhu also explained that his earlier interaction with Nayar helped him get the trial opportunity. He mentioned that Nayar had once visited a Chennai academy where Sandhu had played a match, which left a positive impression and eventually led to the KKR call-up.

Why will KKR target Sunny Sandhu in IPL 2026 auction?

Sunny Sandhu made a strong impact during the Tamil Nadu Premier League this year while playing for the Salem Spartans. He impressed with both bat and ball throughout the season and stood out for his aggressive hitting in the lower order.

His ability to finish innings and also pick up important wickets made him one of the most talked-about young players in the tournament. In the tournament, he made 129 runs in 7 innings with the strike rate of 144.94 and 21.50, and with the ball, he took four wickets at an economy rate of 9.71.

With the IPL 2026 mini auction approaching, KKR have released their long-time match-winner Andre Russell. This has made it clear that the franchise will be looking to add at least one pace bowling all-rounder as a replacement, so in that case, they can go for Sunny Sandhu.

If his form continues, the young all-rounder could well secure his first IPL contract at the 2026 mini auction.
