It turned out to be an eventful day at Manchester, where India scored 264 for four by the end of day one, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan scoring half-centuries. On the contrary, English skipper Ben Stokes took two wickets, while Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant returned to the pavilion after getting injured.
Here, we take a look at the highlights of Day 1 of the fourth Test match, as it panned out at the Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday, July 23.
Sudharsan, Jaiswal Put India On The Front Foot With Defiant Knocks
The visiting Indian side was put into bat by English skipper Ben Stokes, who opted to bowl on a cloudy morning in Manchester. Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul put up a solid 94-run stand for the first wicket.
Rahul scored 46 and Jaiswal went on to score 58, as these two negotiated the first session successfully and lost their wickets in the second session, when both of them departed in a matter of a few runs. While Rahul departed when the score was 94, Jaiswal was the second victim when India had 120 runs on the board.
However, soon after, Indian skipper Shubman Gill had a brain-fade moment as he tried to leave a ball from Ben Stokes alone, which came back in and hit him straight on the pads. He was given out LBW and had to walk back to the pavilion for 12, putting India in a precarious position, losing the third wicket for 140.
Soon after, Sai Sudharsan, who was already in the middle, kept his calm and batted beautifully to score 61 off 151 deliveries with seven boundaries before getting done by Stokes, as he went for a pull and later got caught.
Ben Stokes Bags Two; Rishabh Pant Retires Hurt
From 140/3 , Sudarshan took India's score to 235 while forming a 95-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, with a catch, aggressive middle-order big-hitting wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who was batting beautifully on 37, tried to play a reverse sweep, which hit his bat and then his foot. He was given not out, but on the way, he severely injured his foot. The situation got so bad that Pant had to walk off the field, and he never returned till the end of the day.
Replacing him on the field was Ravindra Jadeja, who batted till the end of the day, scoring 19*, while Shardul Thakur was also batting on the exact same score, as India ended day one on 264 for four by the end of 83 overs, where Chris Woakes took a wicket and skipper Stokes grabbed two.
