In a phenomenal achievement, Yashasvi Jaiswal became the first Indian opener in 50 years to slam a Test half-century at Old Trafford. The swashbuckling batter attained the landmark on day 1 of the ongoing Test against England.

Jaiswal Etches His Name In History Books At Old Trafford

After England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl first, India got a solid start to their innings, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal stitching 94 runs for the first wicket. Although Rahul perished for 46 right after the lunch break, Jaiswal converted his start into a significant score, eventually bringing up a valiant fifty.

Thus, Jaiswal became an Indian opener to slam a half-century at Old Trafford after more than 50 years. The last time an Indian opening batter struck a fifty-plus score in a Test in Manchester was way back in 1974 when Sunil Gavaskar stunned the Englishmen with a ton and a fifty in successive innings.

Jaiswal Becomes 2nd Fastest Indian To 1000 Test Runs vs England

The explosive batter also breached the 1000-run mark against England in Test cricket. He became the second fastest Indian batter to achieve the milestone, having taken just 16 innings to attain the phenomenal landmark.

However, Jaiswal couldn't convert his fifty into a hundred, with England's veteran spinner Liam Dawson getting his prized wicket in the post-lunch session. Coming from over the wicket, the left-arm spinner bowled a full-length delivery, which Jaiswal edged while playing for the turn. English young sensation Harry Brook made no mistake at the first slip, taking a simple catch and sending the southpaw back to the hut.

Nevertheless, this knock came a sigh of relief for Jaiswal, who was under fire following his twin failures in the Lord's Test. As of writing, India were 121 for two, with Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan batting on 1* and 13*, respectively.
