Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans: 168-6 (20 overs) [Sai Sudharsan: 45 (39), Shubman Gill: 31 (22); Jasprit Bumrah 3/14 (4), Gerald Coetzee 2/27 (4)] defeated Mumbai Indians: 162-9 (20 overs) [Dewald Brevis: 46 (38), Rohit Sharma: 43 (29); Spencer Johnson 2/25 (2), Azmatullah Omarzai 2/27 (3)] by six runs.

Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans secured a narrow win over five-time winners Mumbai Indians in match number five of the IPL 2024 season at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Bumrah restricts GT to 168 after Gill, Sudharsan acts

Being tasked to bat first, Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill and his opening partner Wriddhiman Saha walloped a slew of Powerplay boundaries off Hardik Pandya and Luke Wood until Jasprit Bumrah struck in his first over of the innings.

Gill also made his way back to the sheds during the team’s eighth over for a 22-ball 31 after he mistimed one off Mumbai Indians senior man Piyush Chawla.

Sai Sudharsan at number three consolidated the Titans innings with a fluent 45 to his name, and formed brief partnerships with overseas stars Azmatullah Omarzai (17) and David Miller (12).

After Miller and Sudharsan’s sudden dismissals at the hands of Bumrah prompted Titans to slip to 134-5 in 16.3 overs, IPL cult hero Rahul Tewatia provided the slog-overs fury with a handy 15-ball 22 from his end.

Apart from Bumrah’s scintillating figures of 3-14 from his four overs, South African speedster Gerald Coetzee also chipped in with two key scalps, including that of Tewatia in the final over of the innings.

Mumbai Indians fall short to collective GT brilliance

Ishan Kishan, in his return to competitive cricket, fell for a first-over duck to Titans’ fast bowler Azmatullah Omarzai in the run-chase. Thereafter, Naman Dhir at number three landed three fours and a six in his short 10-ball stay at the crease to charge up Mumbai Indians’ batting response at the top.

While Dhir soon became Omarzai’s second victim of the innings, opener Rohit Sharma anchored the run-chase with a 77-run stand with Dewald Brewis. Both Sharma and Brewis shaped up crucial 40s from their ends until their dismissals at the hands of Sai Kishore and Mohit Sharma left the rest of the line-up to fetch their remaining 40 runs from four overs.

Tilak Varma slogged a few during his brief 19-ball 25-run stay at the death, but his dismissal in the penultimate over and Tim David’s rare failure tensed up the chase, with Spencer Johnson’s two-wicket burst tilting the tide back in Titans' favour.

Fortunately for the hosts, rebel captain Hardik Pandya further succumbed to final-over pressure in front of a calm Umesh Yadav, who picked two wickets in succession to lead Titans to a six-run win.
