The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly aiming to increase the playing fees for Ranji Trophy cricketers in order to counter IPL lure. Prior to this year’s IPL 2024 season, a number of players avoided 2024 Ranji Trophy matches to preserve their fitness for the cash-rich league.

A couple of months ago, the BCCI also announced a scheme to increase payments of Test match players.

BCCI likely to incentivize Ranji Trophy after Tests

A BCCI official recently claimed that the board is aiming to increase the playing fees of Ranji Trophy matches in order to prioritize red-ball cricket amidst growing trend of hefty IPL offers.

While speaking with The Indian Express, the official said:

“The BCCI is planning to increase the match fees to give more importance to red-ball cricket.”

The initiative, coupled with the Test pay hike incentive sends out a clear message that the board is aiming to improve the remuneration of red-ball players amidst IPL’s growing popularity.

As of now, Ranji Trophy players make a daily fee between Rs.40,000 and Rs.60,000, depending upon their experience. If a player ends up participating in all matches of a Ranji Trophy season, the daily fee translates to roughly Rs.11 lakh for the entire tournament.

Meanwhile, the minimum base price of a player at an IPL auction is significantly higher, amounting to Rs.20 lakh for a two-month IPL participation.
