Ishan Kishan led India’s belligerent fightback against Pakistan alongside Hardik Pandya as the two shared 138 runs together for the fifth wicket. Kishan himself slapped a run-a-ball 82 in the innings, thus lifting the Indian total from 66-4 to above 200 in their high-profile Asia Cup 2023 Group A clash.

In doing so, the cricketer also broke a rare batting record previously held by former Indian captain MS Dhoni in Asia Cup matches.

Ishan Kishan soars past MS Dhoni for a rare record

Ishan Kishan smeared 82 from just 81 balls in an innings glittered with nine boundaries and two maximums. Remarkably, his counterattacking effort in Kandy’s Pallekele Stadium took him past former Indian skipper MS Dhoni for a rare batting record in Asia Cup matches.

Back during the 2008 Asia Cup, Dhoni scored 76 against the same opponents. However, Kishan’s recent effort took him past the former cricketer and he now holds the record of registering the highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper against Pakistan in an ODI Asia Cup.

Team India eventually charted 266 on the board off the back of sparkling 80s from Kishan and Hardik Pandya in the middle overs. Earlier in the innings, captain Rohit Sharma and number three Virat Kohli both made their way back to the pavilion after getting cleaned up by Pakistan pace maverick Shaheen Afridi.

The speedster claimed two more wickets towards the end to finish with 4-35 from his 10 overs. His teammates Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf both claimed three wickets each from their ends to dust out the Indians inside their 50 overs.
