In a significant development, South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma was ruled out of the second and final Test against Bangladesh, as he had not fully recovered from a left elbow injury. He also missed the first Test as well, due to the same injury and in his place Aiden Markram took the captaincy.
South Africa's Test coach informed about his recovery. He stated that the right-hander has shown substantial progress but is not match-ready yet.
“While the right-hander has made significant progress in his rehabilitation, he will not be match-ready when the second Test gets underway on October 29 in Chattogram,” Cricket South Africa said in a statement. Yesterday (Thursday) was always the day when we were going to make the decision based on his medical condition. There was a plan, a program that he was following,” Conrad told the media from Bangladesh.
Temba Bavuma To Miss The Second Test Against Bangladesh
It is important to state that, in the Bavuma's absence, Aiden Markram will again step in as captain to lead the Proteas. South Africa climbed fourth in the WTC 2023-25 rankings following a seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test on October 24 in Mirpur.
It is further necessary to note that, the captain has sustained injury earlier in the month during an ODI against Ireland. He fell painfully on the ground as he attempted to complete a run. He retired hurt on 35 in that game, and was unable to field. The injury is on the same elbow which Bavuma had hurt in 2022 on a T20I tour of India. It ruled him out of South Africa's tour of England later that year.
In Bavuma's absence, Matthew Breetzke, who debuted in the first Test against Bangladesh, in Mirpur, could be retained at No. 6 unless South Africa opt for an extra allrounder or a bowler in their XI. Left-hander Senuran Muthusamy is a possible replacement, as he also bowls left-arm spin.
The CSA confirmed on Friday (October 25) that Temba Bavuma won’t be fit in time for the second and final Test against Bangladesh, which is set to be held in Chattogram from October 29.
