Brief Scores: England (1st innings): 302-7 (90 overs) [Joe Root: 106* (226), Ben Foakes: 47 (126); Akash Deep 3/70 (17), Mohammed Siraj 2/60 (13)] by stumps on Day 1.

India and England trade punches with each other to share the honours of Day 1 of the fourth Test match at Ranchi’s JSCA International Stadium Complex.

Joe Root calms down Akash Deep’s sizzling debut

Raging English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett provided their side yet another rapid start at the top, with the two sharing 47 runs together from just nine overs. However, their latest ‘BazBall’ spectacle was subdued by India’s debutant and new-ball speedster Akash Deep, who snatched his maiden Test wicket with a peach to Duckett.

A couple of deliveries later, Akash also trapped English vice-captain Ollie Pope for a two-ball duck, before clattering Crawley’s stumps to seize his third wicket with the new-ball.

Out-of-form Jonny Bairstow found some rhythm during his rebuilding effort with senior man Joe Root. However, Bairstow’s newfound momentum was limited to a near run-a-ball 38 by seasoned Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Captain Ben Stokes soon followed suite after he was trapped with a straight shooter from Ravindra Jadeja with just three runs to his name.

With England precariously placed at 112-5, Root reconsidered his team’s rapid run-scoring strategy, as he cautiously added 113 runs from 261 balls for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes.

Their late batting rebellion took England past the 200-run mark without further casualty, before Foakes (47 off 126 balls) lost his momentum to a scorching reverse-swinger from Mohammed Siraj.

Tom Hartley and Ollie Robinson added handy runs during the final hour of the day, with both assisting Joe Root to get to his 31st Test match century before stumps.

Root, batting at 106*, will now resume England’s first innings at 302-7 on Day 2 alongside Robinson (31*).
