Joe Root, arguably the finest Test batsman in the history of English cricket, showed his composure against India on Friday, when England were in tatters in Ranchi on Day 1 of the fourth Test match.

The 33-year-old, who had not been in his best form until today, got to his 31st Test hundred against Rohit Sharma and Co., helping England reach a respectable total after they slipped to 112/5.

In the process, Root achieved a major landmark, something that the world’s all-time greatest Test batters—Steve Smith, Garry Sobers, Viv Richards, and Ricky Ponting, among many others—did not attain in the past.

It was Root's 10th Test hundred against India, and he took 52 innings to get there. No batsman before him smashed as many hundreds as him in red-ball cricket.
