After a lacklustre performance in the first three Test matches against India, Joe Root responded back in style with a majestic century in the 4th Test in Ranchi. This was his 31st Test match ton and 10th against the Indian team.

Root, known for his conventional style of play in Test cricket, opted for a rather aggressive game-play in the first three matches, which back-fired on him. The talismanic batter could only muster 77 runs in the 3 matches and was under-confident heading into the Ranchi Test.

However, the Yorkshire batter went back to basics and played a composed innings under extreme pressure on a surface that was too paced. Root came into bat when England had lost two quick wickets of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope. From 47-2 to 112-5, England lost wickets at successions and it was upto Joe Root to do the rescue work.

England's number 4 Test batter used all his experience to counter the Indian bowling attack and formed a crucial 8th wicket partnership of 113 alongside Ben Foakes. Interestingly, unlike the last few Test matches, Root curbed his attacking instincts and that worked wonders for him and England as he bailed his side out of a precarious situation and notched up a brilliant century with a boundary.

At the time of writing, England are 282-7, with Root batting at 103.
