Brief Scores: England (1st innings): 246 all out (64.3 overs) [Ben Stokes: 70 (88), Jonny Bairstow: 37 (58); Ravichandran Ashwin 3/68 (21), Ravindra Jadeja 3/88 (18)] trail India (1st innings): 421-7 (110 overs) [KL Rahul: 86 (123), Ravindra Jadeja: 81* (155); Joe Root 2/77 (24), Tom Hartley 2/131 (25)] by 175 runs.

Team India overhauled England’s first innings total on Day 2 of their first Test match at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium before Ravindra Jadeja extended hosts’ lead with a belligerent knock.

Jadeja and Rahul pacify England’s rising spin threat

Unbeaten batters Yashasvi Jaiswal (80) and Shubman Gill (23) failed to add much to their overnight scores as both were deceived by Joe Root and Tom Hartley within the opening hour.

From 159-3, middle-order batters Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul led India’s defiance with a 64-run partnership before the former wasted away his cautious start for a slog sweep against Rehan Ahmed. The latter of the two, on the other hand, maintained his composure and listed a well-paced 86 to guide India past the English total in the afternoon session.

Rahul was eventually holed out at deep midwicket to gift debutant Hartley his second wicket of the innings, at a time when Team India was comfortably poised for a big total. Wicketkeeper KS Bharat subsequently added handy 41 runs from his end during his 68-run partnership with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, as the two cricketers extended the Indian lead past the 100-run mark.

Jadeja, after collecting three key English wickets on Day 1, also listed his 20th Test half-century through his counterattacking lower-order diligence.

The star all-rounder, currently batting at 81*, will resume the Indian innings on Day 2 with Axar Patel (35*) with a 175-run first innings lead in the bank.
