Legendary Sri Lankan all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu has been roped in by the UP Warriorz franchise for the forthcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 season. The 34-year-old was signed in by the Warriorz team management as a replacement for English fast bowler Lauren Bell.

Notably, Athapaththu went unsold at the WPL 2024 auction back in November 2023; despite bagging the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award at the 2023 WBBL season for Sydney Thunder.

Chamari Athapaththu lands WPL deal after ICC recognition

After going unsold at the WPL 2024 auction, Sri Lankan legend Chamari Athapaththu eventually landed a deal in the premier Indian T20 competition through the UP Warriorz franchise. She was roped in by them after English fast bowler Lauren Bell withdrew her name from the tournament.

As it turned out, Athapaththu’s WPL 2024 presence was confirmed just a day after she bagged the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2023 award. She was also handpicked by the ICC as captain of their Women’s ODI Team as well as Women’s T20I Team of the year, thus making a near-clean sweep in the women’s white-ball arena of the annual ICC awards.

Back in late 2023, Chamari Athapaththu won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award at the WBBL 2023 season for scoring 552 runs and picking up nine wickets for the Sydney Thunder franchise.

Despite her prolific run of form for Sri Lanka as well as in franchise cricket, she was surprisingly overlooked by all WPL managements at the auction held in November 2023. The star all-rounder even expressed her disappointment after being ignored for WPL 2024 by sharing a cryptic story on her social media account.

Notably, Athapaththu’s WPL 2024 season participation now makes her the first Sri Lankan cricketer in history to compete in a WPL event.
