Being put into bat first by Australian captain Matthew Wade, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad made full use of the pristine batting conditions on offer at the Greenfield International Stadium. Jaiswal led early charge as his 25-ball 53 blazed India to 77-1 by the end of their opening powerplay.

His partner Gaikwad himself produced 58 from 43 balls, while number three Ishan Kishan bludgeoned a 32-ball 52 to take India past 150 runs in just 14 overs. The two sparkling young talents formed 87 runs together for the second wicket from 56 balls, before skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh took up the run-scoring onus for the death overs.

Yadav scored 19 off 10, while Rinku blasted 31 scintillating runs from just nine balls to extend India’s total to a colossal 235-4.

Among Australian bowlers, only Nathan Ellis managed to halt India’s batting juggernaut with timely wickets in his spell, as he finished his four overs at 3-45.

Up against an intimidating run-chase task, Australian opener Matthew Short and number three Josh Inglis both entangled themselves to Ravi Bishnoi’s spin within the opening powerplay itself. Short’s opening partner Steve Smith himself failed to get going in his 19-run top-order start by becoming the first of Prasidh Krishna’s three victims of the evening.

Axar Patel accounted for dangerman Glenn Maxwell while Bishnoi curtailed Marcus Stoinis and Tim David’s threatening partnership with a crucial breakthrough towards the backend. In a high-scoring blockbuster, the young Indian spinner finished his quota of four overs with three wickets against just 32 runs.

Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar and new-ball pacer Krishna himself claimed timely wickets in the final six overs before Australian skipper Matthew Wade delayed the inevitable with a booming 23-ball 42*. Team India eventually kept their guests down to 191 to go 2-0 up in their five-match series.

The two sides will now collide in the all-important third T20I match on November 28 in Guwahati.
