India bowled out for 180 runs on Day 1 of pink ball Test against Australia [Source: AP]
Day 1 of the much anticipated pink ball Test between India and Australia belonged to the hosting team, the Aussies. After opting to bat first, Rohit Sharma and Co. struggled to gauge the pink ball’s lateral movements and succumbed to 180 runs total in the first innings. In response, Australia started well and finished with 86/1 by stumps with a 94-run trail to cover.
Here's how the IND vs AUS Day 1 of second Test panned out in Adelaide:
IND vs AUS Highlights: Mitchell Starc makes a mockery of India’s top-order
Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal faced the wrath of Mitchell Starc to get dismissed on the first ball of the match. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill looked strong with a 69-run partnership. However, minutes before the lunch break, the duo committed Harakiri.
While KL Rahul edged a short ball off Starc to gully, Gill committed a blunder to be adjudged LBW. His premeditated flick shot was nowhere close to the line of the ball, and as a result, Gill was trapped in a plumb LBW dismissal. The big wicket of the session was Virat Kohli. Starc exploited his weakness against outside off-stump line deliveries. Kohli was late to leave the ball that landed on the 6th stump line, and a leading edge went straight to Steve Smith at 2nd slip, thus ending his 7 off 8 balls stay at the crease.
IND vs AUS Highlights: India bundled for 180 as Starc claims fifer
India had no answers to Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland’s fiery spells as Rohit Sharma, who dropped himself to no.6, registered a failure. The visitors’ last hope, Rishabh Pant, was undone by Pat Cummins’ nasty bouncer as he edged to wide gully.
Against the odds, Nitish Reddy showed courage to slam 42 off 54 balls, including 3 boundaries and as many sixes. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc struck the final blow to remove Reddy and complete his 6-wicket-haul. India managed 180 runs in 44.1 overs, a below-par total given the preset expectations.
IND vs AUS Highlights: Bumrah draws first blood after tiring spell
Australia started well in the second innings with a 24-run opening partnership between Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney. Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant made a mess of the catching opportunity in the 7th over. However, on the very last ball of his tiring spell, India’s golden arm, Jasprit Bumrah, struck to dismiss Khawaja. An outside the off-stump delivery was good enough to stun Khawaja as he edged to Rohit at first slip.
That being said, despite the early blow, Australia weathered the final session to finish with 86/1 with 94 runs trail left.
