Similar to the Perth Test, India started the 2nd Test against Australia on a poor note as the visitors tumbled for just 180 runs. The Indian skipper won the toss and India opted to bat first. Further, the Rohit Sharma-led side also let down in the field and missed chances early on in Australia's innings.
Rishabh Pant's Error Nearly Injures Rohit Sharma
Notably, Rishabh Pant was at the centre of criticism after he dropped a catch off Jasprit Bumrah's bowling that could have provided an early blow to the Australian side. On the 3rd ball of the 7th over, Bumrah bowled a peach of a delivery that straightened up after pitching and produced a thick outside edge that was heading towards the first slip.
However, Pant decided to intervene and put a dive to his right. The decision was not appreciated as the ball deviated from his gloves and hit Rohit on his thumb. Not only the chance went down as a dropped opportunity, but it was also a injury scare for Rohit Sharma.
Further, Bumrah also celebrated prematurely, only to later realise that the catch has been dropped. Thankfully, the damage was controlled quickly as Bumrah got rid of Usman Khawaja in the next few overs.
Bumrah Completes 50 Test Wickets
With the wicket of Khawaja, Jasprit Bumrah also completed 50 Test wickets in 2024. He became the first bowler in this year to take 50+ wickets. He has achieved the feat in his 11th Test for the Rohit Sharma-led side this year.
Shedding light on the match, at the time of writing this article, Australia are 38/1 after 17 overs.
