Sunrisers Hyderabad clinched a dazzling four-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, May 7, at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, in what was undoubtedly one of the most enthralling matches of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.  

In a tense and closely-fought contest, it was Abdul Samad who emerged as the hero when it mattered most. Although he was caught by Jos Buttler at long off with just one ball left and five runs needed, a no-ball was called with four runs needed off one ball. Samad seized the opportunity and smacked a straight six to Sandeep Sharma to secure a dramatic win for his team. 

Rajasthan Royals started the match on the front foot, winning the toss and opting to bat first. Their decision paid off handsomely as they posted a mammoth total of 214 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets.

The standout performers for the Men in Pink were Jos Buttler, who played a superb innings and scored 95 runs off just 59 balls, and captain Sanju Samson, who also made a significant contribution with his quickfire knock of 66 runs off just 38 balls. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad chase was progressing nicely, with almost all their batters making significant contributions. However, it was Glenn Phillips who turned the game on its head and swung the momentum in his team's favour with a scintillating knock of 25 runs off just seven balls. 

Notably, it was only his first game in the ongoing season of the lucrative league, but he made an immediate impact and thanks to that, he was named the Player of the Match. Speaking in the post match conference, he expressed his satisfaction at having played a key role in the team's victory. 

Here’s what Glenn Phillips said: 

"It was a situation where it was going to go one of two ways. Happy to get out on top of this one. We are all here to do our job, this is what the team needed today. Fantastic for it to pay off, and I had so much fun today out there,” 

Reflecting on his dismissal, he expressed disappointment that it was unfortunate that he couldn't clear the fence despite the ball being in his slot. He also acknowledged the team's luck in getting the no ball call, but credited Abdul Samad for his excellent finish.

"That was the ball I should have hit the most, I was disappointed the actual slot ball didn't go over the fence. I felt I left a lot out there with 17 needed off the final over, but then Samad did what he did and obviously we got that little bit of luck with the no ball."

The IPL 2023 points table has received a fresh dose of twist with Sunrisers Hyderabad's win in the recent match. Even though they are languishing at the second last position with four wins and six losses, their hopes of reaching the playoffs are still intact.
