Ireland secured a historic win over hosts Bangladesh in the first T20I to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Harry Tector bludgeoned a sublime 69* to set the tone for the visitors, before bowlers Matthew Humphreys and Mark Adair humbled Bangladesh’s star-studded batting line-up.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the first T20I of the three-match series between Bangladesh and Ireland, as it panned out at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on Thursday, November 27.
Harry Tector motors Ireland up to 181
Ireland captain Paul Stirling compiled 21 off 18 balls with four boundaries during his 40-run opening partnership with Tim Tector before he got holed out by Saif Hassan off Tanzim Hasan Sakib inside the powerplay. Tim made 32 off 19 with six fours to race Ireland to 71-1 in just eight overs. The youngster was eventually dismissed by Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain (1-34) around the halfway stage of the innings.
Harry Tector at number three launched five huge sixes and a boundary in his 45-ball unbeaten knock to top-score with a sizzling 69*. Lorcan Tucker (18 off 14), Curtis Campher (24 off 17) and George Dockrell (12* off 7) also made handy runs in the slog overs as Ireland carted 181-4. For Bangladesh, Tanzim Hasan Sakib picked up another wicket at the death to claim figures of 2-41.
Humphreys, Mark Adair douse Towhid Hridoy’s 83*
Bangladesh, chasing 182, crashed to 18-4 in 5.3 overs, losing each of their top four batters inside the powerplay. Mark Adair struck twice with the new ball with the wickets of Parvez Hossain Emon and Litton Das before finishing with figures of 2-20. Matthew Humphreys and Barry McCarthy also picked up a wicket each inside the first six overs to have Bangladesh on the mat early in the chase.
Jaker Ali scored 20 crucial runs in the middle-order, but his dismissal to McCarthy was followed by another set of Bangladeshi causalities as their troubles worsened from 66-4 to 74-8. Towhid Hridoy at number five remained unbeaten as he smacked 83* off 50 balls. However, Hridoy’s rebellious knock merely reduced Bangladesh’s defeat margin to 39 runs as they reached 142-9.
For Ireland, Humphreys claimed sensational figures of 4-13 while McCarthy picked up 3-23 in his four overs.
