Bangladesh captain Litton Das has openly expressed his disappointment after Shamim Hossain was dropped from the squad for the first two T20Is against Ireland. He directly blamed the selectors for not keeping him in the loop over player selections.
The Tigers are set to face Ireland in a three-game T20I series beginning from November 27. However, skipper Litton is dissatisfied with the squad selection and has publicly expressed his outrage.
Litton Das frustrated with Bangladesh selectors
Speaking at the pre-series press conference, Litton Das made it clear that he was not informed about Shamim Hossain’s omission beforehand.
He said he found out about the decision without any prior communication from the selectors or the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which left him surprised and frustrated.
"Look, it would've been good if he was in the team. This is not my call -- it's totally the selectors' call. I don't know why the selectors removed Shamim from the team without giving me any notice. I always thought that when someone handles a team, at least the captain knows which players are coming in and going out," Das said.
Litton explained that while team selection is not in his hands, he believes a captain should at least be kept in the loop about changes to the squad.
However, Litton Das revealed that he has now been clearly told that he must work only with the team given to him, without any say in selection matters.
Shamim was dropped after scoring just two runs in the recent T20I series against the West Indies and struggling for form. But Litton said the decision itself was not what upset him the most.
"I've been told, completely, by the selection panel and the board that I have to work with whatever team they give me. So I don't have any say over which players I want or don't want. All this time I thought that as a captain one gets to plan and organise the team, but I've learnt recently that my job is simply to produce the best results with the team I'm given," he added.
Instead, it was the lack of communication and the feeling that he could not support a player he believed in.
Litton Das fears instability in the T20I setup
Besides, Litton Das also spoke about the effort the team has made to create stability and build a settled squad.
He pointed out that Shamim Hossain had played some excellent cricket in the past, and his contributions had been important for the team. Seeing him get dropped so suddenly was disappointing for him as captain.
"You can't expect every player to perform every series. We've tried for a long time to settle the team. There was a time Shamim played extraordinary cricket, which we needed. For him to be dropped from that position is disappointing."
Despite his frustration, Litton Das insisted that the decision would not affect the dressing room environment. He said the team remains focused on performing well against Ireland and giving their best on the field.
"As a captain, I'm sorry I couldn't back him. I don't expect all 15 players to perform every day. When someone struggles for two or three series, I should back him and I'm really sorry I couldn't give him that backing."
The first T20I between Bangladesh and Ireland will be played in Chattogram on November 27.
