On the back of Joe Root's magnificent 166*, England achieved a scintillating victory against West Indies at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. In doing so, the home side achieved a remarkable record, as they chased down a mammoth total of 309 with three wickets to spare in the second ODI.
England Scripts World Record Against West Indies
Chasing a steep target of 309, England looked fairly uncomfortable at the beginning of the innings, with both their openers, Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett, departing for ducks, whereas the number three batter, Joe Root, along with newly appointed skipper Harry Brook, turned the innings around with marvelous knocks.
Brook scored a fluent 47, whereas Root played the innings of his life, scoring 166* off 139 balls with 21 boundaries and two sixes, at a strike rate of 119.42. Apart from these two, Will Jacks' 49 helped England chase the score down with seven deliveries and three wickets to spare.
Along with Smith and Duckett, Jos Buttler was also the one who recorded a duck, which was the third for the English side in this encounter.
Interestingly, Buttler came into bat at number five, which makes him the third player in the top five to score a duck, and, going by history, this was just the sixth time out of 42 occasions a team had won a game after three of the top five batters scored a duck in ODI cricket.
Adding to this, another interesting fact is that a team had never won chasing 250 plus in this regard, and, going by that, the Three Lions chased down 309, which was massive in its own regard.
So, by doing that, England becomes the first team in history to achieve this landmark after losing three of their top five batters to ducks as they chased down a 300-plus score in ODI cricket.
England Achieves An Unassailable 2-0 Lead Against West Indies
Earlier in the day, the West Indies side batted beautifully, thanks to Keacy Carty's 103 off 105 balls, which was well supported by Brandon King's 59 off 67 deliveries, as West Indies went on to score 308 before getting bowled out in 47.4 overs, where Adil Rashid picked a four-wicket haul.
Despite their best efforts, the Caribbean couldn't halt the English juggernaut as they achieved their second consecutive win of the series and gained an unassailable 2-0 lead.
In the first ODI, England won comfortably by 238 runs as they defended a massive target of 400. The third ODI of the series will be played on the 3rd of June at the Kia Oval in London.
