The first Test match between India and England at Headingley, Leeds is nicely poised after two exciting days of cricket. India scored a big 471 runs in their first innings. In reply, England reached 209/3 by the end of Day 2, which was affected by rain.
India’s strong batting was led by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a brilliant century (101). KL Rahul also looked solid before getting out for 42 just before lunch on Day 1. However, debutant Sai Sudharsan had a tough start and got out for a duck (0), and Karun Nair also went without scoring. But then, captain Shubman Gill played a superb innings of 147, and Rishabh Pant smashed a record-breaking 134, helping India cross 400 runs.
England’s bowlers, especially Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue bowled well, taking four wickets each to end India’s innings.
When England came to bat, their start was shaky due to rain. Zak Crawley got out early for just 4 runs, but Ben Duckett fought back with a quick 67. Ollie Pope then took charge and remained unbeaten on 100. He will continue batting on Day 3 alongside Harry Brook. Jasprit Bumrah managed to get the big wicket of Joe Root for 28.
