Young South African batter Dewald Brevis had a memorable outing in the first T20I of the Tri-Series against Zimbabwe. Coming at number five, Brevis played an instrumental role for the visitors, smashing 41 runs off just 17 balls. However, as he fell nine runs short of his maiden T20I half-century, Brevis failed to break his idol AB de Villiers' record for the fifth fastest fifty for South Africa in T20I cricket.

Dewald Brevis Storm Blows Zimbabwe Away At Harare

After Sikandar Raza's fighting fifty powered Zimbabwe to 141 runs in 20 overs, South Africa had a disastrous start to the run chase, losing debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius for a golden duck.

The experienced duo of Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen also fell cheaply, leaving South Africa tottering at 38 for three in 5.4 overs.

However, Dewald Brevis steered the visiting team towards glory, forming a scintillating partnership with Rubin Hermann. The duo added 72 runs for the fourth wicket before Trevor Gwandu broke the stand by dismissing Brevis.

The Chennai Super Kings batter departed for a blistering 17-ball 41, studded with one boundary and five huge sixes. He missed his fifty by only nine runs. Had he brought up his maiden half-century inside the next three balls, Brevis would've broken AB de Villiers' record for the fifth fastest fifty for South Africa in T20I.

While Quinton de Kock holds the record for two of the five fastest T20I fifties for South Africa (15 balls, 17 balls), Marco Jansen (16 balls), Tristan Stubbs (19 balls) and AB de Villiers (21 balls) are the other members on the list.

Talking about the match, South Africa eventually went past the finish line, chasing the total with five wickets and 25 balls to spare. Although Brevis got out at a crucial juncture, Corbin Bosch and George Linde remained unbeaten, helping South Africa open their account in the points table.
