David Warner blazed his way to a sizzling start against South Africa as Australia chase for a spot in the final of the 2023 World Cup. The dashing opener bludgeoned four sixes in just the first six overs of the Australian run-chase, to catapult his side to 60 without a loss of wicket alongside partner Travis Head.

Through the course of his latest run-scoring blitz against the Proteas at the Eden Gardens, David Warner joined Indian captain Rohit Sharma for a huge batting record in World Cup matches.

David Warner, who entered Australia’s semifinal showdown against South Africa with 499 World Cup 2023 runs to his name, extended his tally to 528 runs through his latest batting effort at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. The legendary opener blasted four sixes and a boundary to race his way to an 18-ball 29, before he was eventually castled by South African spinner Aiden Markram.

Regardless of his dismissal, Warner managed to soar past the 500-run mark in the ongoing tournament, doing so for the second time in succession in a single World Cup edition. The Australian batting veteran had listed 647 runs in the previous World Cup chapter in England back in 2019, where he emerged as the tournament’s second highest run-getter.

Remarkably, David Warner has now become only the second cricketer in history after Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma to score over 500 runs in successive World Cup editions.

So far in the ongoing 2023 event, both Warner and Sharma have yielded identical returns for their respective countries up until their semifinal run. While the Australian batting juggernaut has scored 528 runs across 10 innings at an average of 52.80, his Indian counterpart has listed 550 match-winning runs in the same number of innings at an average of 55.
