Shreyas Iyer mauled New Zealand’s high-flying attack with a barrage of sixes in the semifinal of the 2023 World Cup in Mumbai. Arriving to the crease at the brink of the halfway stage of the innings, the cricketer blasted his second successive ton, and the fifth of his ODI career, to waltz India’s total to a monumental 397-4.

Notching up his hundred in just 67 balls, the 28-year-old whacked four boundaries and eight sixes in his sizzling innings, and even formed a game-defining 163-run partnership with fellow centurion Virat Kohli.

Remarkably, through the course of his match-winning knock, Iyer managed to scale a huge World Cup batting record for India, previously held by legendary southpaws Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh.

Shreyas Iyer achieves huge record for India

Shreyas Iyer faced just 70 deliveries to leave a 105-run mark over New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup semifinal at his Mumbai home ground. The middle-order batting stalwart launched eight sixes in his innings to attain a huge Indian batting record, bettering the likes of former cricketers Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh.

Iyer’s six-hitting spree in Mumbai now makes him the recipient of having hit the highest number of sixes among Indian players in a single ODI World Cup innings. His eight maximums took him past Ganguly and Yuvraj, who had both struck seven sixes each during their playing days. While Ganguly produced seven sixes against Sri Lanka at the 1999 World Cup, Yuvraj thumped as many maximums against Bermuda during the 2007 chapter of the tournament.

After Shreyas Iyer’s latest batting bombardment, here is a look at an updated list of Indian players with most sixes to their name in a single World Cup innings.

Interestingly, Iyer also whacked five sixes against Netherlands just a few days ago in Bengaluru. The cricketer registered his career-best score of 128* in the high-scoring Indian innings, which also marked his maiden century in a World Cup game.

The batting veteran has so far minted 526 runs in 10 World Cup 2023 innings at an alluring average of 75.14, with two tons and three half-centuries to his name. Shreyas Iyer’s persistent run-fest has ensured that the cricketer finds himself among the leading run-getters of the tournament.
