Glenn Maxwell pouched a sensational diving catch to fold up South Africa for just 212 in their innings at the 2023 World Cup semifinal. His fielding effort at long-on dismissed Proteas’ tail-ender Kagiso Rabada and handed his captain Pat Cummins his third wicket of the day.

Glenn Maxwell’s fielding brilliance packs SA

Australia’s gun fielder Glenn Maxwell, stationed at long-on, snared a sensational diving catch near the boundary ropes to dismiss Kagiso Rabada. The South African tail-ender had initially hoicked Pat Cummins towards the region in a bid to score some handy runs in the final over of the innings.

However, Rabada merely managed to find Maxwell as the South African innings was folded up for 212 in 49.4 overs in the all-important semifinal clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Earlier in the day, South Africa had lost both its openers, including in-form Quinton de Kock to Australia’s new-ball pair cheaply within the powerplay overs. Heinrich Klaasen and middle-order stalwart David Miller staged South Africa’s recovery with a sizzling 95-run stand before Travis Head’s twin strikes brought Australia back into the contest.

Miller went ahead and top-scored in the innings with a scintillating century, marking South Africa’s first-ever in a World Cup knockout fixture, to take his country past the 200-run mark. The batting marauder clobbered five stormy sixes and eight elegant boundaries in his 116-ball knock, while Klaasen punched out a near run-a-ball 47 from his end during the middle overs.
