David Warner became the unexpected Australian toss representative for the first T20I against the West Indies in Hobart on Friday (February 9) as skipper Mitchell Marsh continued to undergo a Covid-19 scare.

Marsh, also Australia's premier T20I allrounder and explosive top-order batter, had been approved to take part in the fixture as per Cricket Australia (CA) guidelines but opted out of the toss duties to ensure there was no threat of the virus spreading across.

According to the relaxed set of guidelines issued by CA and ICC, Marsh could take part in the contest as long as he adhered to the protocols, including staying in a separate dressing room and maintaining social distancing from the rest of the players during the cricket match.

The rules compelled Marsh to ask Warner to turn up for the flip of the coin in his place. Even though the change in personnel didn't work for Australia as they lost the toss and West Indies put them in first, Marsh ensured his Caribbean counterpart Rovman Powell, match referee David Boon and anchor Isa Guha wouldn't be near his proximity.

The glimpse of Warner doing the toss was an amusing one for the veteran opener's passionate fans as he continues to fight a battle against CA to revoke his life-time ban from leadership. Warner had recently spoken about the "bizarre" arrangement where even though he can coach a cricket team within the set-up, he can't take up captaincy.

The ban had been imposed in the aftermath of the 2018 ball-tampering saga, which rocked Australian cricket hard. Warner was one of the masterminds of Australia trying to alter the condition of the ball during the Cape Town Test by using sandpaper and was handed a one-year playing suspension apart from a life-long captaincy ban.
