David Warner has been directed by Cricket Australia (CA) to return home by February 7 to prepare for the set of three home T20Is against the West Indies, starting two days later in Hobart. The explosive left-hander, who leads the Dubai Capitals franchise, is bound to miss "at least three games" of the International League T20 (ILT20), according to Fox Sports.
Even though he has retired from Tests and ODIs, the veteran batter remains contractually bound to play T20Is for Australia until rested by the selection committee. The contract runs till the back half of this year, by which, however, Warner will have retired from international cricket altogether with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
Till then, he is required to take part in all of Australia's T20I commitments, which means the batter has to curtail his participation in the ILT20 while facing the Caribbean men and then for a similar three-match series in New Zealand, starting February 21.
Warner's ILT20 Participation To Be Curtailed
Notably, there is an eight-day gap between the final T20I against the West Indies on February 13 and the first game of the BlackCaps challenge. Warner might be interested in making a quick trip to the UAE to play in the playoffs during that little window, but the decision would leave him with a tiresome schedule. The final of the ILT20 is scheduled for February 17.
Either way, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that Warner is required to play the team's only six T20Is before players spread in their respective franchises for IPL 2024 and travel to the West Indies & USA for the T20 World Cup.
"I think most of our players that are going over there are due back on the 7th (of February) in preparation for the T20 in Hobart, so Davey will be a part of those plans," McDonald told the press.
Hobart, Adelaide, and Perth will host the three T20Is versus the Calypso Kings on February 9, 11, and 13. The T20I series against New Zealand is scheduled in Wellington and Auckland on February 21, 23, and 25.
