A rare glitch on the Decision Review System (DRS) resulted in a controversial call against UP Warriorz batter Chamari Athapaththu as she saw the Hawk-eye incorrectly reverse the on-field call of not out during the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 face-off.

In a match against the famed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise, Athapaththu went for a sweep against leg-spinner Georgia Wareham with a full stride and got hit on the front pad. RCB went up in a loud appeal but the umpire gave not out since the ball seemed certain to miss the leg stump with the turn.

However, RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana decided to take a punt and called for a referral. Convinced that the ball was bound to go down the leg side with the replay confirming it was a conventional legspinner, Athapaththu rested easy.

But she was in for the shock of her life when the Hawkeye showed the delivery to be shaping up like a googly, which goes the other way, and predicted the ball to be hitting the stumps in line. Even RCB couldn't have believed their good fortunes over what had transpired as Athapaththu was forced to make the long walk back despite no fault of hers.

Batting at the other end, Warriorz skipper Alyssa Healy couldn't believe her eyes, too, and was seen yelling "no way" when the projected path showed the ball to be hitting the stumps when it was meant to go down the leg-side.

Vrinda Rathi, the on-field umpire, who had given the left-hander not out also wore a surprised look but had to reverse her decision since the protocols required her to go by the technological evidence, which experienced a major error on this occasion.
