South African retained Day 1 dominance with another imposing performance on the second day of the series-deciding second Test match in Chattogram on October 30. After mounting a huge first innings total, South African new ball operators as well as senior spinner Keshav Maharaj picked up key Bangladeshi wickets in the final 45 minutes of play.

With South Africa reaching 386-2 at one stage of the morning session, both cricketers fell in quick succession to Bangladeshi left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. The 32-year-old enigma machine also snared the wicket of Kyle Verreynne for a three-ball duck to claim his fifth wicket of the innings as the Proteas slipped from 386-2 to 391-5 in the space of just four overs.

South African number five Ryan Rickelton nicked one towards Mahidul Islam Ankon off Nahid Rana shortly after lunch for a 41-ball 12 to his name. Forming forces at 423-6, all-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Senuran Muthusamy batted on for the next 31 overs to add over 150 runs to the South African total. Mulder notched up his maiden Test century by making an unbeaten 105 off 150 balls with eight boundaries and four sixes.

Muthusamy, on the other hand, clobbered 68* from just 75 deliveries to bring up his first half-century in Tests before South African captain Aiden Markram declared the innings at 575-6 in 144.2 overs.

South African paceman Kagiso Rabada got the new ball swinging at the top as the legendary speedster removed Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam for a six-ball duck and number three Zakir Hasan for just two. The following over, Rabada’s new ball partner Dane Paterson had Mahmudul Hasan Joy taken at second slip by captain Aiden Markram.

Senior spinner Keshav Maharaj knocked over Hasan Mahmud in the final few minutes of the day as Bangladesh reached 38-4 in nine overs by stumps.
