South Africa took a handy lead by stumps on the opening day of the first Test of the series at Mirpur’s Shere Bangla National Stadium on October 21.
Here’s the timeline of how BAN vs SA panned out in Mirpur:
BAN vs SA Highlights: Wiaan Mulder, Rabada Destroy Bangladesh’s Top-Order
South African pacemen Wiaan Mulder (3-22) and Kagiso Rabada got the new ball moving at the top, as the duo wrecked the entirety of Bangladesh’s top-order within the opening hour of the match. Mulder orchestrated the early breakthrough for the visitors by getting rid of Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam for a four-ball duck.
The speedster also dismissed Mominul Haque and Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto within his next two overs as the hosts slipped to 21-3 at one stage of the morning session.
Kagiso Rabada scalped his 300th Test wicket in the form of senior middle-order batter Mushfiqur Rahim. Litton Das also made his way back to the sheds a while later as Bangladesh lost its first five wickets for just 45 on the board.
BAN vs SA Highlights: Keshav Maharaj Mops Up Bangladesh Tail At 106
Senior South African spinner Keshav Maharaj got into the action by trapping Mehidy Hasan Miraz plumb in front at 60-6. Dane Piedt toppled Mahmudul Hasan Joy, before Kagiso Rabada picked up his third wicket of the day in the form of tailender Nayeem Hasan to claim figures of 3-26. Maharaj collected two of the final three wickets on offer to finish with 3-34, thus enveloping Bangladesh’s entire first innings for just 106 in 40.1 overs.
For the hosts, the mere 30 scored by opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy turned out to be the biggest benefactor of the innings, considering as many as six batters failed to reach double digit scores.
BAN vs SA Highlights: Taijul Islam Takes Five, But SA Take Lead
Young Bangladesh seamer Hasan Mahmud knocked over South African captain Aiden Markram with a peach in the first over of the innings. Markram’s opening partner Tony de Zorzi and number three Tristan Stubbs steadied the Proteas innings to some extent with a swift 41-run partnership for the second wicket.
Brought into the attack by Bangladesh captain, senior spinner Taijul Islam made early impact with the ball by picking up the key wickets of Tristan Stubbs (23), David Bedingham (11 off 25) and Tony de Zorzi (30 off 72), in quick succession no less.
Islam (5-49) also accounted for the early exits of Matthew Breetzke and Ryan Rickelton as South Africa slipped to 108-6 after 31 overs. Wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne (18*), in compliance with fast bowler Wiaan Mulder (17*) negotiated the remaining overs of the day to take South Africa to 140-6 (41 overs) as they find themselves 34 runs ahead of the hosts.
