Cricket Australia will likely honour Michael Bevan as well as late cricketers Andrew Symonds and Dean Jones on Australia’s One-Day Cup trophy upon facing excessive fan demand. Lately, numerous Australian cricket fans have been pushing the idea for each of the three cricketing legends to have their names immortalised on the One-Day Cup trophy in some manner.

In a recent poll conducted by Cricket Australia, the names of Symonds, Jones and Bevan were preferred by fans over the likes of Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist and Steve Waugh. While the Australian board was originally slated to shortlist one candidate from the three cricketing legends, fans are now backing the idea of finding a way with which each of the three ex-players can be honoured.

Cricket Australia likely to rename One-Day Cup

Cricket Australia will likely be renaming their annual One-Day Cup, Australia’s premier List A domestic competition, in a way to honour former players Andrew Symonds, Dean Jones and Michael Bevan. The names of the three aforementioned cricketers emerged after a recent online poll conducted by Cricket Australia.

James Allsopp, CA Chief of Cricket, recently stated that Cricket Australia will be reaching a decision within the coming weeks. However, Allsopp did not specify if the Australian board will be honouring any one of the three cricketers or will be finding a way to immortalize each of them on the One-Day Cup trophy.

Andrew Symonds, a veteran of 26 Tests and 198 ODIs, was an integral member of Australia’s 2003 and 2007 World Cup winning squads. Symonds also featured in Australia’s 2006 Champions Trophy winning line-up, and scored a stiff 58 in the semifinals. The dazzling all-rounder tragically passed away in 2022 in a single-vehicle car crash, at the age of just 46.

Australia’s yesteryears legend and 1987 World Cup winner Dean Jones also passed away, albeit in September 2020 in Mumbai when he was on commentary duties for the IPL 2020 season.

Michael Bevan, on the other hand, has been often described as one of the greatest ‘finishers’ of all time.
