Glenn Phillips counters spin with a glorious 87

Resuming New Zealand's first innings at 55-5 after a washout on Day 2, charismatic middle-order batter Glenn Phillips clobbered his way to his side's recovery against Bangladesh. The right-hander produced nine boundaries and four sixes to list 87 scintillating runs from just 72 balls.

Phillips formed a crucial 49-run stand with Daryl Mitchell before adding handy runs with Kyle Jamieson and captain Tim Southee. His belligerent batting effort eventually took New Zealand past Bangladesh's first innings total, as the 'Black Caps' managed to secure a six-run lead at the halfway stage of the game.

For the hosts, spinners Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz both combined forces to take six wickets collectively, while new-ball paceman Shoriful Islam picked the key scalps of well-set New Zealanders Phillips and Jamieson towards the closing stages of the innings.

Bangladesh lost opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy at the hands of experimental new-ball spinner Ajaz Patel in the first over of the innings for just two. In-form number three and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also lost his concentration as he chipped a simple catch to Kane Williamson off Tim Southee in what turned out to be the final over of the day before early stumps.

The hosts will now resume their second innings on Day 4, holding a mere 30-run lead, with opener Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque still batting at the crease.
