Sri Lankan bowlers came down firing on the Bangladeshis on a rain-curtailed opening day in Colombo. After getting invited to field first, Sri Lanka picked up as many as eight wickets before post-lunch rains and bad lights enforced early stumps.

Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of Day 1, as it panned out at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on Wednesday, June 25.

Fernando And Co. Jolt Bangladeshi Top Four

New ball operator Asitha Fernando struck early in the match by getting rid of Bangladesh opener Anamul Haque for a 10-ball duck. Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva also struck with his wily off-breaks by deceiving a well-set Mominul Haque.

Shortly after the lunch break, fast bowler Vishwa Fernando got Bangladeshi skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto nicking behind towards the wicketkeeper for eight, while spinner Tharindu Ratnayake denied Bangladeshi opener Shadman Islam off his half-century at 46 as the visitors slipped to 76-4 after 29 overs.

Bowlers Continue Good Work With Late Wickets

Senior man Mushfiqur Rahim and wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das crafted 67 runs for the fifth wicket to lead Bangladesh’s fightback against Sri Lanka. Taking Bangladesh to the brink of the 150-run mark, Das eventually fell to debutant Sonal Dinusha for 34. The young left-arm spinner also deceived Mushfiqur for 35 a few overs later as Sri Lanka strengthened its grip over the visitors.

Fast bowlers Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando bagged the wickets of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nayeem Hasan respectively late in the day as Bangladesh reached 220-8 from 71 overs before early stumps.
