After a disappointing draw in the first Test against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka is hoping for a massive turnaround in the upcoming second Test. As the second Test is set to commence soon, the hosts are making some exciting strategies.

Ahead of the game, Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva talked about their possible strategies. From weighing the seamer combination to deciding who steps in for Angelo Mathews, he offered insights into the team’s game plan.

De Silva Eyes Early Seam Attack To Exploit Conditions

In the first Test, Bangladesh batters put on a batting show on the Galle pitch, but the Sri Lankan bowlers grabbed the attention lately. Tharindu Ratnayake and Priyanath Ratnayake secured 10 wickets together, and the other bowlers also made a valuable contribution.

With the next clash set at the Sinhalese Sports Club, Sri Lanka is eyeing fresh bowling tactics. As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya de Silva hinted at unleashing seamers early on to exploit the conditions.

“We've got 12 in the squad, and we've got options, because our weather is changing from time to time as well. We were hoping to go with three seamers, but it's hard to tell exactly - the pitch also looks flat,” he said.

"Not just in the last series in Bangladesh, even in the previous one it was pace that got a lot of wickets. We talked a lot about how the seamers got about 70% of their wickets. But it's not easy to play seamers on these pitches, but we're trying to play three. Let's see what the pitch is like tomorrow morning," he added.

Will De Silva Take Angelo Mathews’ Place?

After Angelo Mathews bid adieu to the longest format after the last match, the number 4 position is now looking for a successor. When asked if he’s ready to take over, skipper Dhananjaya de Silva gave a witty response that instantly stole the spotlight.

“If you think I'm good enough, I'm ready to bat at four. I'm set to bat there,” he said.

Batting at the number 3 position, the Sri Lankan skipper scored 559 runs in 18 innings with an average of 32.9. Compared to this, he scored 122 runs in 6 innings with an average of 20.3. With no confirmation yet, all eyes will be on the team sheet come match morning to see if a shuffle is on the cards.
