In a sensational display of spin bowling, Afghanistan spin duo Allah Ghazanfar and Rashid Khan destroyed Bangladesh in a 236-run chase to fetch a 92-run victory. Ghazanfar grabbed a six-wicket-haul to bowl out Bangladesh for just 143 runs in what turned out to be a brutal collapse. With the comprehensive win, Afghanistan take 1-0 lead in the 3-game ODI series.

Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first on a tricky Sharjah wicket. Gurbaz suffered a niggle and Taskin Ahmed took advantage of his struggle to draw first blood. Then arrived the lethal Mustafizur Rahman to unleash carnage. One by one, he scalped 4 wickets to trigger a sudden collapse.

After trapping Sediqullah in LBW, Rahman rolled his fingers across the ball, and Azmatullah got stuck in his crease, which led to an outside edge plucked by wicket-keeper Rahim. Azmatullah was dismissed for a duck, and Afghanistan were reduced to 35/4 in the first powerplay.

Shahidi scored his 52 in 92 balls, whereas Nabi missed out on his hundred by 16 runs to get dismissed by Taskin Ahmed for 84 off 79 balls, including 4 boundaries and 3 sixes. Nangeyalia Kharote’s unbeaten 27 off 28 at the end helped Afghanistan post a competitive total of 235.

Najmul Shanto and Soumya Sarkar provided Bangladesh with a stable start. While the skipper scored 47 off 68 balls, Sarkar contributed with 33 off 45 deliveries. However, spinner Allah Ghazanfar’s spell in the middle overs completely destroyed Bangladesh. 

He knocked out Mehidy Hasan Miraz with a fullish delivery that stayed low. Miraz edged the sweep to lose his crucial wicket. Later, Rashid Khan bowled Mahmudullah to send half the Bangladeshi side back to the hut with 135 runs on the board.
