A sold-out Sydney Cricket Ground rose in a thunderous ovation as two heroes of the Bondi attack joined a pre-match tribute ahead of the Pink Ashes Test on January 4.

Syrian-born father Ahmed al-Ahmed, his arm in a sling, and 14-year-old Chaya Dadon, on crutches after being shot while shielding children, walked onto the pitch ahead of the final Ashes Test. They were part of a group honoured for their courage during the December tragedy.

How SCG celebrated the Bondi terror attack!

The names of the attack’s fifteen victims appeared on the stadium screens under the words “forever in our hearts” as first responders, including off-duty police and hospital doctors, led a procession.

The ground announcer addressed the crowd, stating, “Thank you everybody, thank you for sharing our gratitude for the incredible service that these individuals and many others provided. We thank you all for your continued care for our community in response to this tragedy. Thank you.”

Australian players Alex Carey and Cameron Green applauded the pair as they passed. Following the national anthems, al-Ahmed, Dadon, and the responders were greeted by New South Wales sports minister Steve Kamper and Cricket Australia’s Todd Greenberg.

Retiring batter Usman Khawaja then led the Australian team in shaking hands with each of the honoured guests.

Why Ahmed al-Ahmed is being celebrated as Bondi hero?

Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old Syrian-Australian fruit shop owner and father of two, emerged as a symbol of courage during the December 14, 2025 terror attack at Bondi Beach. While having lunch, Ahmed witnessed gunfire and people being killed and injured.

Driven by an instinct to save lives, he ran toward danger and tackled one of the attackers, Sajid Akram, from behind. Ahmed wrestled a long rifle from the gunman and forced him to retreat, as captured on video.

During the confrontation, Ahmed was shot twice by the second attacker, Naveed Akram, suffering injuries to his leg and shoulder. He underwent multiple surgeries and remained in stable condition before arriving for the SCG Test.
