Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin offered supportive advice to Ruturaj Gaikwad following the batter's exclusion from India's ODI lineup. Drawing from his own four-year absence from the team, Ashwin emphasized the fierce contest for spots within the national side.
Gaikwad made way for the returning Shreyas Iyer, having initially been called up as injury cover for Shubman Gill. Batting at number four, he scored 8 and a fluent 105 in the ODI series against South Africa, which called for his deserving presence in the upcoming series.

Ruturaj Gaikwad's sublime form in VHT
Ruturaj did not get to bat in the third ODI, where India secured a comprehensive victory. With no place in the subsequent ODI squad, he has returned to domestic cricket, leading Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
He has been in sublime form in the VHT since then. He currently averages 64.25 with 257 runs from five matches. He also boasts one century and one half-century in the tournament, further underlining his dominance in the fifty-over format.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Maharashtra currently holds third position in Group C with three wins from five matches. Their next league fixtures are against Chattisgarh on January 6 and Goa on January 8. The tournament final is scheduled for January 18 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
While Gaikwad made his way for Shreyas Iyer, the recently named vice-captain of India himself was in superb form before he was sidelined for hisn injury. He made a 61 against Australia in the ODI series and also maintained an average of 60.00 during the IND A vs AUS A encounters.
