The Bangladesh Cricket Board announced its 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 on January 4, with captain Litton Das set to lead the side. The squad, however, featured a notable omission in star all-rounder and Bangladesh ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

The spinning all-rounder’s exclusion was largely backed by his poor run of form in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League. Representing Sylhet Titans, Miraz, who also is captaining the side, endured another disappointing outing.

Playing against Chattogram Royals, Mehidy managed just five runs after facing six deliveries before being dismissed in the second over by Mukidul Islam.

To be fair, Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s overall BPL form has been far from convincing. Since December 27, he has featured in four matches, scoring only 48 runs at a modest average of 12.00. His struggles were further highlighted by single-digit scores in his last three outings, where he registered scores of 5, 4 and 6.

Miraz’s lean patch with the bat extended beyond the BPL. In the NCL T20 2020–25, he played two matches but could only score 13 runs. His returns with the ball have also been underwhelming. In the BPL 2025–26 season, Miraz picked up just two wickets and failed to take a single wicket in the last T20I series against Pakistan.

What might have led to Miraz's exclusion in World Cup squad?

Overall, Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been out of form with both bat and ball, which underlines the Bangladesh selectors’ decision to leave him out of the final T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

Nevertheless, Mehidy Hassan Miraz was also overlooked in the 2024 World Cup squad, following a subpar performance in the T20 World Cup 2022. He played only one match in that tournament, scoring just 11 runs and going wicketless.

Although his batting average in away conditions stands at 20.11, he has still picked up 138 wickets from 86 matches. However, his declining batting average over the past year may have played a role in his omission from the Bangladesh national setup.
