Former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn is showing positive signs in his recovery after being hospitalised with meningitis on Boxing Day. The 54-year-old was placed in an induced coma but is now progressing well with his treatment at Gold Coast University Hospital.
For the uninitiated, meningitis, an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord's protective membranes, requires urgent medical care for symptoms like sudden fever and severe headache.
Damien Martyn’s wife shares health update
Damien Martyn’s wife, Amanda, expressed the family's gratitude in an official statement while expressing the tough times they are going through at the moment.
“Damien is progressing well with his medical treatment. We also want to express our deepest appreciation to the medical team at Gold Coast University Hospital, who have been nothing short of amazing throughout this challenging time," she said.
Gilchrist wishes well for former teammate
Former teammate Adam Gilchrist also shared a positive update while commentating.
“Thank you, everyone, for the heartfelt love and wishes and care for Damien as he goes through a challenging time. He’s still in the hospital... certainly in the last 24 hours, some positive signs are the indications coming out of the various tests he’s having," he stated on FOX Cricket.
"There’s been so much interest and love for Damien. A fine player, terrific fella. I just hope he can continue his recovery,” Gilchrist added.
Who is Damien Martyn?
For those unaware, Damien Martyn played 67 Tests and 208 ODIs for Australia, amassing over 9,500 international runs with his best average in Tests at 46.37 from 109 innings.
Known for his elegant batting, he was part of the 1999 and 2003 World Cup-winning teams, playing a crucial unbeaten knock of 88 in the 2003 final. He retired unexpectedly during the 2006-07 Ashes series.
