Smriti Mandhana compiled 25 at run-a-ball against Sri Lanka in the first T20I of India’s five-match home series. Jemimah Rodrigues later unleashed a fiery 69* at number three as India mowed down Sri Lanka’s 121 with eight wickets and more than five overs remaining to take a 1-0 lead.
Mandhana also attained a significant batting record in the game, completing 4,000 T20I runs in the process to become the first Indian and Asian women’s cricketer, and only second overall to breach the landmark figure.
Jemimah Rodrigues congratulates ‘sister’ Smriti Mandhana
Shortly after Team India’s comprehensive win in Vizag, ‘Player of the Match’ Jemimah Rodrigues congratulated her senior teammate and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana for completing 4,000 runs in T20I cricket.
Taking to her Instagram account, Rodrigues shared a BCCI post of acknowledging Mandhana’s landmark moment, and described the seasoned pro as her “sister”. Jemimah was also seemingly left in awe of Smriti Mandhana’s “biceps” on the said post, as her caption read:
“She’s my sister! Also crazy biceps.”
When Smriti Mandhana reached 18* in her innings, the prolific Indian opener completed 4,000 runs in her T20I profile, thus becoming only the second cricketer in women’s T20I history after New Zealand legend Suzie Bates to reach the landmark figure.
Her current T20I tally reads a staggering 4,007 runs in 148 innings at a healthy batting average of 29.90 with a staggering strike rate of 123.78. Overall, Smriti Mandhana also became only the fifth cricketer across both, men and women categories to bring up 4,000 runs in T20I cricket, joining the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam in the process.
With age and form on her side, Smriti Mandhana might well surpass Suzie Bates (4,716 runs) to become the most prolific women’s T20I batter of all time within the next few years.
The 29-year-old will now face Sri Lanka Women in India’s second T20I of the five-match series on December 23 in Vizag.
