India Women began their T20I series against Sri Lanka Women with a comfortable eight-wicket win at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday night.

A disciplined bowling performance followed by a fluent batting show, courtesy Jemimah Rodrigues, helped the Indian team chase down a small target with ease.

Sri Lanka succumb to 121 after 3 run-outs

After winning the toss, India chose to bowl first and started on a positive note. Sri Lanka lost their captain Chamari Athapaththu early for 15, bowled by Kranti Gaud inside the powerplay.

The early wicket put pressure on the visitors, and runs were hard to come by during the first six overs. Sri Lanka managed only 31 runs in the powerplay, with Indian bowlers keeping things tight.

Vishmi Gunaratne tried to hold the innings together for Sri Lanka. She played a patient knock of 39 off 43 balls and found support from Hasini Perera, who scored 20.

However, regular wickets stopped Sri Lanka from building momentum. Deepti Sharma was economical in the middle overs and removed Perera, while Shree Charani picked up Harshitha Madavi for 21.

Sri Lanka struggled to accelerate towards the end, with two run-outs further hurting their cause. Vishmi got run out in the 18th over, and though there were some cameo performances by Kaushani Nuthyangana and Kavisha Dilhari, they could not add much to the score.

Sri Lanka finished on 121/6 in their 20 overs, a score that looked below par on a good batting surface.

Jemimah Rodrigues lead India to perfect win

India’s chase began at a brisk pace, with Shafali Verma scoring a quick 9 off just five balls before falling early.

Smriti Mandhana looked steady at the other end and added 54 runs with Jemimah Rodrigues for the second wicket. Mandhana made 25 before being dismissed, but by then India were well on track at 67/2.

The star of the match was Jemimah Rodrigues’ innings. Batting with confidence and control, she found gaps regularly and kept the scoreboard ticking.

Her unbeaten knock of 69 off just 44 deliveries included ten boundaries and she showed a great deal of maturity in the shortest version of the game.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur played a calm supporting role, scoring 15 not out as the pair added an unbroken 55-run partnership.

India achieved the target in only 14.4 overs and remained on a total of 122/2. With this victory, India Women started the series with a considerable lead of 1-0 as all the bowlers and batters performed exceptionally well in the first match.
