Legendary New Zealand batter Kane Williamson is contemplating retirement after the end of his team’s ongoing three-match home Test series against West Indies. The series-deciding third Test at Mount Maunganui might well be Williamson’s final international outing, however, the seasoned pro is yet to make a definitive statement regarding his future.

In the middle of a high-scoring bout, the 35-year-old admitted that retirement thoughts are “certainly” circulating his mind, and he will decide his international future at the right time.

‘Casual’ Kane Williamson to no longer prioritize New Zealand

It is worth noting that Kane Williamson recently announced his retirement from T20I cricket. The legendary batter also signed a casual agreement with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), which gives him freedom to pick and choose international fixtures depending upon his own availability.

Now contemplating thoughts of making his Test retirement, Kane Williamson has admitted that such ideas have “certainly” crossed his mind, but insisted that he will be making his decisions involving New Zealand future “series by series”. While speaking amidst the third Test against West Indies in Mount Maunganui, he said:

“As you get to the latter stages those thoughts certainly enter your mind. It's almost series by series.”

Addressing his commitment for New Zealand ahead of some high-profile Test series against England and Australia, Kane Williamson added that he will be “crossing those bridges” when the time comes. He stated:

“We'll just cross those bridges as they come.”

After the Test series against West Indies, Kane Williamson is scheduled to fly to South Africa with his family. The modern-day batting behemoth will be representing the Durban’s Super Giants franchise as a replacement player for Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam in the upcoming SA20 2025-26 season later this month.

Williamson also played eight matches for the Super Giants back in SA20 2024-25 earlier this year, aggregating 233 runs in the process at a prolific average of 46.60.

A veteran of 107 Tests for New Zealand, it remains to be seen the extent of his participation for New Zealand in the remainder of the 2025-27 WTC cycle. The 2021 WTC winning captain Kane Williamson also recently took part in a home ODI series against England.
