Rohit Sharma fans ran a trend ‘Congress Ka Baap Rohit’ on social media after a Congress leader fat-shamed the Indian captain. Shama Mohamed called Rohit fat and unimpressive as a captain and cricket fans took offence.
Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed found herself at the centre of controversy after her tweet calling Indian captain Rohit Sharma "fat" and the "most unimpressive" skipper India has ever had.
The post sparked outrage among cricket fans and political observers alike, leading her to delete it after severe backlash.
Rohit Sharma fans revolt against Congress with social media trend
Meanwhile, the fat-shaming comment left Rohit Sharma unimpressed as they ran a trend against the Congress party. The fans put thousands of tweets with the tagline ‘Congress Ka Baap Rohit.’
Following the controversy, Dr Mohamed defended herself in an ANI interview, stating her comments were about the general fitness of sportspersons and not intended as body-shaming.
She maintained that as a citizen, she had the right to express her opinion in a democracy.
The Congress party quickly distanced itself from the remarks. Congress Media and Publicity Department chairman Pawan Khera issued a statement clarifying that Dr Mohamed’s views did not represent the party’s stance.
The BCCI also reacted, with Secretary Devajit Saikia saying that such comments could demoralise the Indian team during a crucial tournament.
In the meanwhile, amidst the controversy that has swept the Indian political system, Rohit Sharma remains preoccupied with his job at hand.
He is leading India in the Champions Trophy 2025 and will face Australia in the first semi-final scheduled on March 4 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
