A political firestorm erupted on social media after Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed body-shamed Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, calling him "fat" and "the most unimpressive captain" while questioning his credibility compared to legends like Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.
The tweet, which sparked widespread outrage, led to the Congress party distancing itself from Mohamed’s remarks and urging her to delete the post. The controversy escalated as BJP leaders seized the opportunity to criticize Congress, with national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla linking the incident to Rahul Gandhi’s leadership failures.
Amid the political slugfest, Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, broke his silence in an emotional exclusive interview with Republic TV, fiercely defending his student's legacy and slamming the "shameless" comments.
Dinesh Lad Defends Rohit Amidst 'Fat-shaming' Remarks
Speaking to Republic TV, an upset Dinesh Lad did not mince words while giving a verbal thrashing to the Congress leader who fat-shamed Rohit Sharma.
"How can you say like that Rohit is very fat and he is not ready to play for International level? Shameless thing they are saying."
Dinesh Lad who mentored the Indian skipper back in his childhood, however, ensured that he trusts Rohit Sharma's potential. The host of the show asked how he looks at these things as this is not the first time the Congress party has targeted cricketers. Avoiding the political inclination, Lad shared an honest reply.
"I think whatever they wanted to say I don’t mind for that. I know Rohit’s potential, I know how he is leading the Indian team so it is a shameless thing she is saying. I cannot comment further."
Lad’s remarks echoed the sentiments of millions of fans who rallied behind Sharma, highlighting his track record as a World Cup-winning captain and one of India’s most successful white-ball leaders.
Rohit Eyes On Australia Clash
While the Congress-BJP war of words continues, the focus now shifts to Rohit Sharma’s on-field leadership as India prepares to face Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final.
For Sharma, the controversy is unlikely to deter his mission as he is inclined to stay focused ahead of the game on March 4 and given the track record of India's performance against Australia in ICC tournament knockouts, it is best to say that the Men in Blue will be trying their best to upset the Aussies.
