Washington Sundar's selection in the Indian playing XI ahead of Kuldeep Yadav brought a lot of criticism ahead of the Edgbaston Test. The cricketer, though, delivered important contributions in that game and has now come up with a match-defining performance of four wickets in the second innings to bowl out England for 192.

The off-spinner first picked the big wicket of well-set Joe Root and followed it up with another one of Jamie Smith. Then, in the 55th over of the innings, he unleashed a special delivery to get rid of English captain Ben Stokes and finished off by cleaning up Shoaib Bashir. Interestingly, all four wickets were bowled, and the drift he got in his deliveries proved to be a decisive factor in his success.

Washington Sundar Makes The Ball Tak With His Magical Drift

According to Cricbuzz, Washington Sundar is almost getting twice the drift than the other three spinners, Ravindra Jadeja, Shoaib Bashir and Joe Root, in this series. It speaks a lot about the quality of Washington Sundar as a spinner, and Cricbuzz also states that the wicket of Stokes in the second innings of the Edgbaston Test was the one with maximum drift among all the wicket-taking deliveries in England since 2006.

The same drift helped Washington Sundar dominate in the home series against New Zealand last year, and this performance in England is likely to increase his confidence further. The young cricketer's performance against New Zealand ended on the losing side, though, and he would be hoping that this one helps India get over the line.

India have a target of 193 in front of them, and if they chase it down, it would be their highest-ever in England in the longest format. Washington Sundar has batted well in this series too, and his contributions lower down the order could prove crucial again.
