In a widely expected development, Delhi Capitals (DC) named Jemimah Rodrigues their new captain for the forthcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) season. The 25-year-old will replace Meg Lanning, who has joined UP Warriorz after being released by the three-time runner-ups.

"The JSW-GMR co-owned Delhi Capitals today announced the appointment of India star Jemimah Rodrigues as captain ahead of the 2026 season of the Women’s Premier League," Delhi Capitals on Tuesday confirmed the news in a statement.

A well-deserved captaincy reward for Jemimah!

Jemimah, India’s recently-concluded World Cup-winning hero, has been the part of the DC set-up ever since the inaugural edition of the tournament, which began in 2023. In fact, she was the first-ever pick by the Delhi-based franchise, and has made 507 runs across 27 WPL games at an impressive strike rate of 137.67.

"Jemimah has been with us since Day one, and there was never any doubt that she would one day captain the team. Beyond her on-field heroics, her infectious smile and boundless energy have made her a much-loved presence in the dressing room, and I am confident she will lead the squad exceptionally well," Parth Jindal, Co-owner of Delhi Capitals, said.

"Her magical innings against Australia in the ICC Women’s World Cup semi-final was truly inspiring, and we are immensely proud to have her represent Delhi Capitals and now lead the team. I wish her the very best as she starts this new chapter with us, and I am certain she will excel in this role and help us cross the line after three consecutive finals.”

Having played 113 T20Is for India, Jemimah has been an integral part of India’s squad for the shortest format, where she has scored 2444 runs thus far. Overall, the stylish batter has notched up 14 half-centuries, and would like to improve her numbers immediately, as India are currently up against Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the five-match series in Visakhapatnam.
