As the Mumbai Indians (MI) prepare to face Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, concerns around the fitness of ace pacer Deepak Chahar have emerged as potential setbacks in their bid to reach the final.
MI are on the verge of creating history with a potential sixth title, which would put them ahead of CSK. They defeated the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Eliminator with a 20-run victory in Mullanpur.
So ahead of this much-awaited Qualifier 2, the main question is Will Deepak Chahar play today's match?
Will Deepak Chahar Play Qualifier 2?
Deepak Chahar suffered a hamstring injury during MI's last league match against PBKS. The star pacer was forced off the field after bowling just one over in that game, though he returned to complete two more overs. However, he subsequently missed the Eliminator and has been under observation ever since.
As per a report by ESPNCricinfo, only Chahar and English pacer Reece Topley were seen training at the Narendra Modi Stadium on the eve of the crucial match. Chahar was spotted with padding both above and below his left knee, walking carefully and taking support when stepping up.
The report also notes that Ahmedabad's stadium layout could be a challenge for someone suffering a hamstring strain. The long walk to the dressing room and uneven levels around the players’ area make it physically tough for injured players. So it can be concluded that Chahar's inclusion will likely depend on how he feels on the morning of the match.
Who Will Play If Deepak Chahar Misses Out?
If Chahar is deemed unfit, Reece Topley is the likely replacement. The left-arm pacer has not featured yet for MI this season. It is important to note that he was the only other player apart from Chahar seen at the venue on Saturday. His presence at training suggests the team management is likely thinking about getting Topley in place of Chahar.
Gleeson’s Late Injury Scare Adds To MI’s Concerns
MI’s overseas pace options took another hit in the Eliminator vs GT when Richard Gleeson walked off mid-over due to discomfort in his right leg. After bowling just three deliveries in the final over, Gleeson left the field, and Ashwani Kumar completed the over. Though the injury did not appear serious. If he is not fully fit, MI is unlikely to risk him in a high-stakes knockout game.
