The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken action against the West Indies team following their heavy defeat against England in the first One Day International (ODI) on May 29 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. ICC penalised the team for maintaining slow over-rate against the Hosts.

ICC Fines West Indies After Slow Over-Rate in ODI

According to ICC regulations, teams must bowl a certain number of overs within a set time. If they fail to do so, they can be penalized. In this case, the West Indies team, led by captain Shai Hope, bowled one over less than required, even after allowing for extra time due to delays.

As a result, the ICC match referee Jeff Crowe, from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel, imposed a five percent fine on each player’s match fee. This punishment follows Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with slow over-rate offences. The rule states that players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl in time.

This fine adds to the team’s disappointment after already suffering a tough loss on the field.

"The penalty is in line with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences. As per ICC regulations, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for each over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time," said ICC.

England won by a huge margin of 238 runs after scoring 400 runs for 8 wickets, thanks to impressive half-centuries (scores over 50 runs) from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jacob Bethell.

In reply, the West Indies could only manage 162 runs before all their players were out. Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton each took three wickets to help bowl them out.
