Why Ishan Kishan Is Not Taking Part In The Ranji Trophy? Report Explains

Wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan has found himself embroiled in controversy lately, drawing attention for reasons far from favourable. Since taking a break from professional cricket in December last year, Ishan has been at the centre of a storm, opting out of national and state team duties.

His break came just before the Test series in South Africa, citing mental fatigue as the reason. Consequently, he was overlooked for selection in both the home T20I series against Afghanistan and the ongoing Test series versus England.

Rumours circulated that Ishan was disgruntled with the management's decision to include Jitesh Sharma in the T20I squad. Speculation heightened when he was sighted in Dubai, prompting discussions within the BCCI regarding potential disciplinary measures.

However, coach Rahul Dravid dismissed these speculations, urging the 25-year-old to rejoin the domestic circuit as a pathway back to the national team. Despite this, Ishan chose to abstain from participating in the Ranji Trophy.

Recent reports from close associates shed light on Ishan's situation, indicating that the loss in the 2023 World Cup final had a profound impact on him. He continued playing thereafter, concealing his anguish, until mental fatigue finally caught up with him.

"He was deeply affected by the ODI World Cup final loss in Ahmedabad, much like countless others in our country. He wanted a break immediately after the tournament but was persuaded by the management to continue playing. He complied without questioning but eventually succumbed to mental exhaustion, prompting his request for a hiatus," a source revealed as reported by Indian Express.

Addressing Ishan's absence from the Ranji Trophy, sources emphasized his fondness for the tournament but clarified that he is not rushing his return to cricket.

"Ishan has always held the Ranji Trophy in high regard. Despite his busy schedule with the Indian team during the 2022-23 season, he managed to play a couple of Ranji games and even scored a century against Kerala, which earned him a spot in India's Test squad. Allegations suggesting otherwise are baseless," the source added.

The stance of the BCCI on the matter remains to be seen, particularly concerning Ishan and players like him who opted out of the Ranji Trophy against the board's directive.

Meanwhile, Ishan has resumed training post-break and was recently spotted practicing with Mumbai Indians teammate and skipper, Hardik Pandya, in anticipation of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season in Baroda.
